I recently entered the franchise ownership world with Cliff and Justin as my brokers, and I am overdue in giving them a review which I had promised to them. I have been through franchisee training, my first reunion, and am still very early in the process of building my business. I thoroughly and completely recommend Franocity as a broker and guide into the world of investing and opening a small business franchise. I strongly recommend that newcomers read The Dark Side of Franchising to familiarize themselves with some of the pitfalls of the industry. A strong recommendation from this book, and other sources, is to find a broker with a real history of owning franchises - not a broker looking for fast sales to bank on commission with no real experience or guidance. Justin was my day to day counsel; both he and Cliff had prior experience owning and buying franchises together as business owners. They steer you towards realistic options that avoid debt burdened upfront investments, with an investment horizon that is within your means. They owned and sold businesses, and have made the mistakes that give them the perspective to give real advice. Try to not be close minded and go for the business you know, be willing to consider new fields and markets - a properly designed franchise system can be operated by someone who has no experience in the type of market it serves. You do, however, need to spend the time and energy to run and work on the business, accept and engage in training, talk to other owners, and be willing to be stretched to find new strengths and weaknesses in handling the range of responsibilities of owning and managing a business. Franchising is not a passive source of income, it returns what you put into it. I even spoke to a competing broker, who gave advice on what to expect from a broker but recommended I stick with Franocity (but keep him as a backup if something soured), given that all expectations were met. They kept in touch, chased down franchisors, and followed up after my engagements. They were known and liked by the franchisors, and offered advice on what to ask and look for. I was a slow mover in this process, but Franocity is serious about spending time with clients who take business ownership seriously and not as a get rich quick, passive income opportunity. When deciding on a brand, consider the complexity of the business and its operations, the actual market in your area for the business, advice and input from other owners (who are often more honest than you'd expect), and treat this as a real time and money commitment over the next few years. If the business feels icky and wrong, or mired in risk you don't think you can manage, consider another brand. Good brands can be in bad markets, and bad brands can be in good markets, try to find the best combination of a good brand and good market with your financial expectations in mind. If you don't know where to start in the world of owning a small business and think franchising is right for you, talk to Franocity and listen to what they say. My only real criticism, is that I wish I had spoken a couple more times to Cliff, particularly at the end of our relationship. Justin is great to work with and a great coach, but Cliff was clearly busy chasing down leads and trying to grow his company - a parting moment with them both after tying the knot with a franchisor would have been memorable.
